Concluding Opinion
While the issue of segregated African-Canadians in Ontario is over, it's conclusion was not handled in the best way. It took over 25 years for African-Canadians to be accepted into the military as a regular regiment. Also, the handling of Africville was horrible. As a nation we took to long to abolish segregation. Segregation should never have been allowed to set foot in Canada.
There are multiple ways to prevent a social problem such as this from occurring in the future. As a Canadian society, we have grown to accept each other, in our growing multicultural identity, so really, a social problem of the sort is unlikely to begin again. However, if it did, we already know how to react. We, as a society would have to be taught, in schools and through means of advertising (i.e. social media) that racism and discrimination is not OK and we must all individually contribute to end this problem. The government has already implemented the " six-point actionplan to combat racism and discrimination."
We, as Canadian citizens, must be educated about our past. We have to learn about all of the terrible things that we have done in the past. We need to learn about discrimination against blacks, residential schools, drug abuse, Aboriginal mistreatment, and all the other bad things that have been part of our nations history. We will learn from our past, so we will not make these mistakes again in our future.
